Corning introduced two new automotive interior glass solutions to customers at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas last week. As automakers respond to consumer demand for more integrated and interactive displays, Corning’s new Gorilla Glass solutions for automotive interiors are designed to respond to these trends and provide the highest product performance and superior system economy.

"Consumers want a more connected and immersive driving experience in the cockpit. Automakers are responding by deploying larger, longer, more shaped, and more integrated displays," Corning Automotive Glass Solutions Said Michael Kunigonis, vice president and general manager of the program. "As a result, an automotive-specific use case has emerged to respond to these trends and challenge today's existing covering materials, which may fail as much as one-third in industry reliability tests, thereby increasing supply chain costs."

Kunigonis said this is why Corning scientists have developed the industry's first two AutoGrade™ cover glass solutions for automotive interiors, in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) formats. The 2D cover glass is optimized to pass industry reliability tests (using Corning's system-level design guidelines) within 99% of the time, while retaining its real feel, superior durability, and superior optics for flat applications. Corning's 3D glass was developed for forming or bending applications. When bent into shape, it provides the same reliability performance as 2D cover glass.

Corning Commercial Director Fabio Salgado said: “One of the most compelling features of Gorilla Glass for 3D automotive interiors is that it can bend at room temperature to accurately cover the curved surfaces of modern automotive interiors without affecting the cover. Reliability of glass." Automotive glass solutions.

Compared with similar thermoformed parts, Corning’s proprietary ColdForm™ technology can reduce the cost of molded cover glass parts by up to 40%, while maintaining excellent optical performance and providing AutoGrade™ reliability.

"We are very pleased with the manufacturer's interest in Gorilla Glass for cars," Kunigonis said. “More than 50 new models representing more than 25 automakers around the world are designing our glasses into their cars. Last week we had an excellent response to our latest innovations in the automotive industry.”

AutoGrade™ Corning Gorilla Glass for automotive interior 2D and 3D will be mass-produced in 2019, and automakers have included it in the design of the 2020 model year.
