Tisbury: Never enforced such a thing-The Martha's Vineyard Times

Heard on the street: If you can't be kind, at least be vaguely decent. Here to remind you that the Sunday holiday open day that was originally scheduled to be held this Sunday at Tisbury Senior Citizen Center has been cancelled.

When I started reading Tom Dresser's latest book on Martha's Vineyard, I was disappointed with all the Mayhews.

In the beginning, Dresser said that Thomas Mayhew appointed himself "Governor." In fact, Mayhew received this title after the British took over the New York colony, including the island. In 1671, the colonial governor Francis Lovelace awarded Mayhew the title of "Governor for Life", and at the same time, Edgartown and Tisbury merged. For people in the 1600s, Mayhew is already very old, but it is his honor. A copy of this announcement can be found at the Martha's Vineyard Museum.

The Chilmark Library’s large book sale will continue until this weekend, starting on Tuesday at half price during normal library opening hours.

The capital movement is still raising funds through the Vineyard Haven Public Library Development Fund Corporation (VHPLBFI), a non-profit organization established in 2019 whose sole purpose is to raise funds for the construction of the library. Online donations can be made through the VHPLBFI website vhlibrarybuildingfund.org. You can also find the commitment form and more detailed information about the project on the VHPLBFI website. Donations can be sent to VHPLBFI, PO Box 4961, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568 by check and pledge form.

They also offer an online monthly meeting of the Martha's Vineyard Haiku Club at 6pm on Tuesday, December 21st. This is hosted by Caroline Joy Adams, and her published books include "Have Fun with Haiku". The theme of this month is the winter solstice. Use vhpl_mail@clamsnet.org to register one or two programs.

I am very happy to have a new washing machine and dryer. Mine passed away just before Thanksgiving. My good son helped me choose the new one that just arrived. Of course, they have touchable symbols instead of knobs. Fortunately, my son also took me through the whole process for the first time. Looking at the glass in the lid to see this process is a bit strange. Never seen it before. But the machine works for me, so far we live peacefully together.

Do I wear a mask when I need it? I am not satisfied with the fact that although we should have rules or even laws on wearing masks, it seems that there has never been such a thing as law enforcement. Even at the federal level. State and federal laws require masks to be worn on public buses-including SSA buses to and from the parking lot. But no one enforces these rules, neither the driver nor the state police. God knows who is responsible for letting the tourists who don't wear masks board the ferry. Or has anyone even considered law enforcement. I am selfish. I don't like others to endanger my life deliberately. And yours.

Today a bunch of birthday balloon wishes are given to Laura Bibi. Happy birthday tomorrow Lyrae Littlefield and Kate Malkie. I extend my best wishes to the twins Mattson and Sutton Coster on Monday.

Hear it on the street: Remember, Santa may appear in a mysterious disguise, wearing a FedEx or UPS or even a post office uniform.
