Hell's Kitchen attitude, New York state of mind

Rooftop pool views of the Hudson River, quirky, modern design touches and tempting amenities abound at Hell’s Kitchen’s newest luxury building — The West. W42ST got an early look at the newly-opened residence full of sleek, sustainable architectural touches that could tempt many never to leave 11th Avenue.  The West stretches along 11th Avenue between W47/48th Streets. “We have a lot of local interest from New Yorkers, and also New Yorkers local to Hell’s Kitchen,” said Senior Sales Director Angeli DeCecchis. “We have many tenants interested in moving here from surrounding buildings and from Hudson Yards. It’s nice to see that people are loyal to the neighborhood.”

Stretching along 11th Avenue between W47/48th Streets, the 222-unit residence broke ground in 2018 and was designed by Dutch architectural firm Concrete, known previously for the CitizenM global hotel chain. Concrete collaborated with Rotterdam-based company StoneCycling to engineer the massive brick facade composed from 229 tons of recycled construction material. It has been created using 30 differently sized and shaped bricks made of a mix of construction debris and clay sourced from the Netherlands. They are prominently on display not only on the building’s exterior but in the striking lobby, where bricks arranged in Morse Code spell out a poem about Hell’s Kitchen.  The “Morse Code” reception wall at The West. Directly following the building’s high ceilinged, plant-filled entryway is a glass-encased, greenhouse-style library and lounge where residents can check out titles to read, relax by a working fireplace or enjoy a sun-drenched workspace.

The first seven floors, encased by the brick facade, are high-ceilinged, loft-style spaces, several of which arrive in turn-key, fully-furnished style by interior design firm ASH NYC (known for their work on Providence boutique hotel The Dean and the upcoming Baltimore Hotel Ulysses) with terrazzo-patterned tables, lush velour couches, and pops of color throughout.  The Glasshouse library area is just off the main lobby at The West. The top five floors, known as The Cloud residences, each feature a unique floor plan with jutted-out glass balconies and bedrooms that appear to float over nearby 11th Avenue. The architectural firm was keen to maximize each square foot, said DeCecchis, adding that each unit’s open walk-through floor plan allows residents to glide from the dining area to living room to the bedroom with space-saving sliding doors and efficiently installed storage and laundry closets.

As for the building’s amenities — if the spectacular rooftop pool deck views weren’t enough, The West features an 8th floor recreation deck (complete with giant Jenga, Foosball, chess sets and grills) with a spectacular modernist mural from New York-based artist Tony “Rubin” Sjöman, a decked out private indoor/outdoor dining room perfect for hosting large dinner parties, a terrace dog run as well as a state-of-the art fitness center.  The spectacular rooftop pool at The West. Beyond the usual meager assortment of elliptical machines, the gym at The West has extensive cardio machines as well as weight and strength training spaces, a full size, lofted yoga studio and a generous Astroturf outdoor exercise terrace, in which fitness consulting company The Wright Fit will offer al fresco training sessions to West condominium residents. And for the younger set, a jaunty playroom sits adjacent to the fitness center, filled with playhouses, books and toys for the littlest West Siders.

Completing the city-within-a-city vibe, residents can offer visiting guests fully furnished apartments to stay in rather than sleeping on someone’s couch. The eighth-floor amenities deck stretches towards Hell’s Kitchen and the Midtown skyline. Photo: Phil O’Brien

DeCecchis notes that while units are booking up quickly, if you’re looking to find your cloud palace on 11th Avenue —  units range from $780K to $2.8M and there are still available apartments for sale! Rooftop pool? It’s a children’s wading pond. Hopin’ the kids have fun in that little puddle.
